Sarah, David and Michael’s share memories of their time studying Business and Finance at City College Norwich in the 70’s, plus what they’ve gone on to do since.
Sarah Coombes (nee Worden) was at City College Norwich from 1974-1976 studying a Medical Secretarial course.
In her own words Sarah tells us:
“Unfortunately, I cannot recall the names of any of our lecturers. I do however recollect a delightfully batty old dear who taught us anatomy and physiology! I have very fond memories of my time at college, and remember Geraldine Young, Kathy Ferris and Melanie Gwilliam as fellow students.
After leaving college, I went to work at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge and became medical secretary to Professor Sir Roy Calne. He was the Professor of Surgery and a leading liver transplant surgeon. It was fascinating work!
During this time I met and married one of the junior doctors. We ended up moving to Doncaster and had two children. When I returned to work it was part-time for my husband and the other doctors in the town.
Now, I am retired!
I belong to a book club, take an active part in village life as well as having just become a grandmother for the first time.”
David Pearson was at City College Norwich from 1974-75 when he studied his City & Guilds Printing Technicians’. He remembers his design tutor running trips to Egypt. Since leaving, David spent 35 years working for the Cambridge University Press and is now working for Deloitte.
Michael Harrowven joined City College Norwich in 1976 in order to study IT and Business Studies.
“It was an excellent atmosphere in which to study and very rewarding. I was appointed as the Student Federation Vice President before being elected as President. I was also appointed onto the main College Board as the Student Governor.
Since leaving College I have been in various managerial roles:
- Banking – Barclays Bank Group, Bank of Scotland and Bank of Wales
- Aviva Group
- Chairman of Parish Council
- Chair of Defra ADHAC Committee
- Chairman of Saffron Housing Group
- Director, Non-Executive and Trustee on the boards of several Companies and Charities across the region
I am currently Investment Platform Manager at Aviva and Director, Non-Executive and Trustee of several companies and charities.”
