Christina Sadler (nee Benton) was a City College Norwich student from 1981-82 when she studied Accountancy.
Hard-going double lessons but very useful!
Christine thoroughly enjoyed her year at CCN. She tells us
“Double costing lessons first thing on Monday morning and last thing Friday afternoon with Basil Winspear could be hard going (as I am sure it was for him!) but have been so useful. They have allowed me to design many college course costing models off the back of the lessons! Financial accounts using Frank Wood 1 and 2 books was great fun too. The most important lesson being that the debit side is nearest the window!”
Technology of the 80’s
Information Technology was new and very exciting then. Christine remembers writing accounting programmes that went into the large Harris Mainframe Computer using punched tape. It took a week to get the results, how times have changed!
The other students Christine studied with were very friendly and helpful, she tells us many have progressed on to have successful careers and happy lives.
“I look back with very fond memories of my time at City College Norwich and want to thank the tutors who dedicated their lives investing in the next generation!”
Discovering a passion and purpose in life!
Most of Christine’s friends went off to University after completing their A levels. She, however, was keen to start in the world of work and earning money! Before starting college, Christine had already secured a training contract with Harper Smith Bennett & Co at 7 The Close, Norwich and City College Norwich was going to provide her a year focused on “laying a solid foundation” of business skills and knowledge.
With a further 4 years training in the workplace she qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1986.
“This opened the doors to many exciting opportunities including travel and developing my German working in Munich as an auditor, international audit and consultancy with Dalgety PLC for Europe and North America. Then in 1992 I discovered Further Education and found my purpose in life!
I have enjoyed serving in senior management roles in a wide range of colleges. These include general FE, land based and sixth form. I value being part of a successful and motivated team. My passion is high quality education and skills for every student so that they can achieve their full potential, live happy and fulfilled lives and for each of them to make a difference in the world.
I am currently self-employed as a merger consultant/project manager and currently helping the FE sector develop a more secure future.”
