Held in music……..
These days if you telephone the college and get put on hold, you will hear music composed and performed by our very talented Music diploma students.
Back in the summer of 2011, however, the college went one step further. CCN asked former A Level student and aspiring hip hop artist C.O.L.L. to produce a City College Norwich song!
The song was co-written by former student Joel Siwale (Cee Jay), founder of Interim Records, who was one of two entrepreneurs in residence at the time.
The college song featured lyrics such as:
FE, HE, at City College Norwich
I came to college so I can get some knowledge
And make my future solid
And, memorably, included reference to our post code:
I’ll be there all day
Admittedly the song divided opinion. However, it certainly got people talking about the college and our young entrepreneurs in residence.
The music video attracted media attention when it was shared to 2.3 million followers by a social media account linked to American hip hop artist MC Hammer.
At the time the song was released, C.O.L.L., who had just completed his A-levels with the Sixth Form Centre, said:
“We came up with the idea to write this song to inspire other students, as the college helped me a lot in my study time and with video production. Cee Jay and I came up with something catchy, not too cheesy. It took about 20 minutes to write it and about one hour to record it.”
C.O.L.L., who was a genuine, hard-working and talented student, and an all-round nice bloke, talked about his reasons for choosing CCN in this video:
C.O.L.L. wasn’t the only person to write and perform a City College Norwich song. Former member of our Teacher Development team Maureen Pettican also wrote a CCN song, which incorporated our ‘Challenging Minds, Inspiring Success’ strapline. Unfortunately we haven’t yet been able to locate this in our archive – but we will keep looking!
A college song was probably always destined to earn Marmite-like reactions, but we like the fact that C.O.L.L. and Maureen enjoyed their time at CCN so much that they were inspired and up for giving it a go!
