Vivian’s Secretarial Studies memories
Vivian Sadler was a student at City College Norwich in 1952 when she studied Commerce and Shorthand typing which were part of Secretarial Studies at that time.
She tells us
“We started our class at Duke Street in Norwich before moving into the new premises in Ipswich Road. Those studying commerce and art were the first to move.
We christened our new desks by scratching our names on them. Naughty girls!
After leaving, I joined the WRAF and was in signals, a teleprinter operator.”
Pru’s Memories from City College Norwich to the other side of the world!
Pru Johnson (nee Moxon) was a City College Norwich student from 1969-1970, during which time she studied secretarial, typing, shorthand, law GCEs, RSA III (advanced) and RSA English Language (advanced).
“I don’t remember the tutor but she was a really hard task master!
We were drilled in typing and shorthand every day, but we had to be, it was only a one year course.
We had no social life to speak of, as we had no time! My friends at UEA in Norwich who I occasionally saw at weekends seemed to have a very easy time compared to me, but it was worth it.
I passed everything with top marks and never looked back. I used my skills wherever I went and sometimes it was far away. Saudi Arabia, as well as London and many other parts of the UK.
Thanks Norwich City College, you set me up fantastically.”
Skills to use ‘World-Wide’
Pru has been all over the world and been able to use her skills in these far flung places and tells us:
“My husband was in the RAF and we were in Saudi Arabia for two years in the mid-70’s. At that time, I had a wonderful job as the first female Executive Secretary to the Director of Shipping in Al Khobar on the East coast.
We expanded very quickly and I became the “Queen-Bee” of the operation, very well paid with lots of responsibility.
It set me up to take on high powered jobs when we got back to UK.
We have since lived all over the UK. I’ve had a restaurant in Wales, a cheese business in Cardiff and now I’m the director of a software business.
Additionally, we have sailed all over the world and still own our own boat and visit Ireland, the Scilly Isles and other places west of the mainland regularly.”
